Single Award Science is a two year unitised course which builds on the science you have studied at Key Stage 3. You will study a combined course of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. However, because this GCSE is designed for breadth of study rather than depth, it is not intended for progression to a GCE course in Chemistry, Physics or Biology. It is, however, a sound preparation for further education and employment as you will learn important skills such as working with data, problem solving, investigating methods and drawing conclusions.

Double Award Science is a two year unitised course which builds on the science you have studied at Key Stage 3.        You will study a combined course of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. This GCSE is designed for breadth and depth, and is intended for progression to a GCE course in Chemistry, Physics or Biology.

Single Award Science : CCEA Exam Board

Biology, Chemistry and Physics are examined in this course through a modular process. The three modules are completed over the course of two years with a written examination assessing the students competency in each of the areas. Practical skills are assessed through coursework and completed in Yr 12.

One GCSE grade is awarded for the course and it is offered at higher and foundation tier.

Unit 1: Biology Section A: Staying Alive Section B: Human Activity and Health

Unit 2: Chemistry Section A: Chemical Patterns and Our Environment Section B: Materials and Their Management

Unit 3: Physics Section A: Electricity, Waves and Communication Section B: Fossil Fuels, Road Transport and Safety, Radioactivity, and Earth in Space

Unit 4: Practical Skills

Modular Examination

Each of the Units 1,2 and 3 are assessed through a written examination

Double Award Science : CCEA Exam Board Biology, Chemistry and Physics

Biology, Chemistry and Physics are covered separately, with module exams in each subject in Yr11. In Yr12 Biology, Chemistry and Physics are covered separately and examined through Terminal papers in each subject. Practical skills are assessed through coursework and completed in Yr12.

There are 2 GCSE grades awarded for the course. It is offered at higher and foundation tier. To study any of the Sciences at A-Level, it is essential that the GCSE double award course is studied at higher tier.
